Foreign Friday: Special A

“Don’t call me Number 2!”

This week’s Foreign Friday title is S.A. Special A by Maki Minami.

The Story

Her whole life, Hikari Hanazono has been consumed with the desire to win against her school rival, Kei Takishima – at anything. He always comes out on top no matter what he does, and Hikari is determined to do whatever it takes to beat this guy…somehow!

The Characters

Hikari is strong, honest and sincere, but not the sharpest tool in the shed. Her eternal rival is rich, cool, and in control of everything – except her. The five main secondary characters cover the majority of most other major personality types, giving the story a variety of personalities.

What I Thought

It’s a fun story. Most of plot isn’t too deep, and the humor is on the ridiculous side sometimes, but if you want an entertaining shojo romance, this is a good one. While most of the story focuses on relationships, it also gives an interesting window into the trials of the wealthy, and the restrictions and roadblocks that come with money. The series is 17 volumes long, and is readily available in English in the U.S.

There was an anime adaptation of the series, although it ends before the end of the actual series. I found it enjoyable, although I’ve only seen it online in subtitles.
