Foreign Friday: Songs to Make You Smile

I don’t have a way to encourage you with words. But…I hope…you’ll listen to my song. – Songs to Make You Smile

This week’s Foreign Friday entry is Songs to Make You Smile by Natsuki Takaya, an anthology of some of her early work.

The Stories

In these touching and unforgettable stories from Natsuki Takaya, young men and women search for the things that mean the most to them, from the love of a deceased father to the perfect, uplifting melody.

The Characters

Since each story within the book is a stand alone (apart from the last one, which is a side story to Takaya’s series Tsubasa: Those with Wings), it’s difficult to summarize the character traits. Takaya experiments with several different types of characters in each tale, making it diverse and interesting.

What I Thought

The author of Fruits Basket, Takaya has a great talent for making endearing characters, which is best experienced by reading her one-shot stories in this anthology. Many, if not all of them, were written early on in her career, and some of the plots are a little thin, or lack the subtle quality that she would later develop, but I thought all the stories were enjoyable and sweet, and I’ve always been a fan of her art style. The book has 5 short stories (the first one was my favorite.) If you want something with good art, and a soft, uplifting tone, this is a good one.

    They sound sweet.

I usually like to read things with a lot of intense action or intense drama, but when I need something that will just make me go “aaawww, so cute!” I pick up this one.
