Foreign Friday: Beauty Pop

“…..I’m going to bed.” Beauty Pop

This week’s Foreign Friday features Beauty Pop by Kiyoko Arai.

The Story

Although a truly gifted hairstylist, Kiri Koshiba has no interest in using her talent to pursue fame and fortune, unlike the three popular boys in the “Scissors Project” at school. Determined to become the best makeover team in Japan, they give showy makeovers to handpicked girls. As much as Kiri tries to shy away from the Scissors Project spotlight, she finds herself responding to beauty’s call…

The Characters

Kiri Koshiba could easily be described as outwardly apathetic, but inwardly caring. In contrast, the head of the Scissors Project Shogo Narumi is loud, short tempered, and a little self-centered. The pair compliment each other to give a comedic air to the series. Most of the secondary characters have a stereotypical feel, but since the series is mean to be a light-hearted type comedy, it isn’t a major drawback.

What I Thought

Beauty Pop is a light, enjoyable read. A light comedy, it later develops some romance in the second part of the series. Kiri and Naru (Shogo Narumi) are an entertaining duet, with the rest of the cast feeding off their roles. The backdrop of hairstyling and makeup gives the series it’s unique spin, leaving behind the idea that anyone can become beautiful. The entire series is available in English in the US.

The artwork is light and expressive, typical of Shojo style manga.

Stay tuned for next week!
